Instant Expert: The quantum world

Saturday 14 September, 10am - 5pm EDT | SVA Theatre, 333 W 23rd St, New York, NY 10011, United States

Unravel the mysteries of the quantum world and explore its groundbreaking impact on the future. This one-day masterclass invites you on an immersive journey into the fascinating realm of quantum mechanics. Join us as we delve into the latest discoveries and unveil the innovative technologies reshaping our world, from quantum computing to cryptography and beyond.

Quantum theory, once confined to the realm of the microscopic, is now revolutionising fields from materials science to artificial intelligence. This masterclass explores the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, from superposition and entanglement to tunnelling and uncertainty, and showcases their far-reaching implications for our understanding of the universe and its technological possibilities.

At this Instant Expert, you will:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics.
  • Discover the groundbreaking potential of emerging quantum technologies across various fields.
  • Engage with leading experts and get a glimpse into the future shaped by quantum advancements.
  • Ask questions and delve into the ethical and societal implications of this paradigm shift.

Talks and speakers:

Quantum theory 101

Nicole Yunger Halpern, Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science, University of Maryland

Quantum physics has a reputation for being counterintuitive. Nonetheless, quantum phenomena are theoretically predictable, experimentally observable and harnessed in technologies. In this talk, Nicole will introduce the bread and butter of quantum physics, including superpositions, the uncertainty principle, wave-particle duality and entanglement, as well as the reason behind the name “quantum physics”. These phenomena are enabling a growing generation of technologies, from quantum computers and the world’s best clocks to sensors for gravitational waves.

Quantum entanglement: Entangling New York City

Mehdi Namazi, Chief Science Officer, Qunnect

Quantum entanglement is one of the most fascinating yet counterintuitive discoveries in the history of humanity. In this presentation, Mehdi will discuss not only what entanglement really is and how it is shaping the world around us, but also how we are building devices capable of creating quantum entanglement between particles of light in order for us to redefine how we communicate with each other.

Quantum Field Theory

Matt Strassler, theoretical physicist, blogger and writer

In this talk, Matt will introduce key concepts necessary to understand how quantum field theory works and the role the Higgs field plays. He will guide us through his research and reveal its profound implications for our understanding of the universe.

Quantum computing

Katie Pizzolato, Director, IBM Quantum Theory and Computational Science

Two more exciting talks to be announced soon...

Hosted by Karmela Padavic-Callaghan

Karmela Padavic-Callaghan is a science writer at New Scientist reporting on physics, materials science and quantum technology. Karmela earned a PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics and atomic, molecular and optical physics from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. Their research has been published in peer reviewed journals including Physical Review Letters and New Journal of Physics.
